Een Portugese stad of Portugees dorp herken je aan zijn azulejos<\/em>. Al sinds het begin van de Portugese geschiedenis worden de \u2013 vaak blauw beschilderde \u2013 tegels gebruikt om huizen en monumenten te beschermen tegen de zilte wind. Maar ook binnen zie je ze vaak opduiken als figuratief element. Vandaag zijn azulejos uitgegroeid tot een nationaal symbool. Wie een toeristisch winkeltje binnen waait kan er niet aan ontsnappen. De fijne patronen worden afgedrukt op alles wat denkbaar is: van theekopjes over T-shirts tot pluchen sardines toe.<\/p>\n

De tegelkunst werd zoals veel aspecten\u00a0 van de Portugese cultuur ge\u00efntroduceerd door de Moren in de 8ste<\/sup> eeuw. Hun al-Zulecha <\/em>(‘kleine steen’)\u00a0waren nog niet de gladde tegeltjes van vandaag, maar hadden fijne richels die moesten voorkomen dat de verf ging uitlopen voor ze gedroogd was. In de 16e<\/sup> eeuw werd een techniek ontwikkeld die toeliet de verf direct op de klei aan te brengen, waarop de azulejos-kunst een grote vlucht nam. Niet langer bleven de afbeeldingen beperkt tot regelmatige patronen, ook heuse taferelen vonden nu hun weg naar de Portugese muren. Vooral de rijkere Portugezen bestelden graag enorme panelen met jachttaferelen, veldslagen of fantasierijke weergaven van de reizen van Vasco da Gama en andere ontdekkingsreizigers. Aan de kerken werden dan weer Bijbelse taferelen geschonken. Omdat die vaak hele muren besloegen en daarom deden denken aan grote wandtapijten, gingen dergelijke azulajos in de volksmond algauw \u2018carpetes\u2019 <\/em>heten.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_5139\"Het zijn vandaag echter vooral de iconische symmetrische patronen die het straatbeeld overheersen. Al worden ze tegenwoordig massaal geproduceerd, en beperkt het kleurenpalet zich al lang niet meer tot blauw en wit, de azulejos blijven een wonderbaarlijk zicht.
